The use of Feng Shui began about eight hundred years ago in China and was based on the ancient science of Geomancy.
Feng (air, wind) and Shui (water) are the two basic elements of the Earth. These elements are the life force of our “blue planet.” The Chinese Encyclopedia defines Feng Shui as “the external and visible signs of the heavenly Yin and Yang: the art of arranging the human environment to be aligned with the Vital Energy (Ch’i).” Feng Shui is pronounced “fung sway.”
What is Geomancy?
Geomancy is the predictive science of the earth. In ancient China approximately 6000 years ago (3000 BC), great sages or “men of wisdom” had knowledge about our planet and its movement in the galaxy as well as the existence of many other celestial bodies. The movement of the Earth on its axis, as well as its movement around the Sun, creates a flow of energy and a rhythm that produces constant changes in the life of humans, flora, and fauna. These changes are connected and directly affect our satellite the Moon, which controls and directs the constant flow of subtle energies. The ancient Masters called them: ching=essence, ch’i=vitality, and sheng=spirit. The science of geomancy is based on the principle of the balance of the two modes of energy Yin (the passive, descending, calm energy) and Yang (the active, ascending, and aggressive energy). The five external elements which are fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. The eight polarities and forces of nature as described in the I Ching or “Book of Classical Changes” are heaven and earth, fire and water, lake and mountain, wind and thunder. In about 400 BC, the great master Lao Tzu (author of Te Tao Ching) added his knowledge and discoveries about what he called, “The Nine Transformations”, which described the effect of the position of planet Saturn in the galaxy, and its effect on the orientation of the Earth according to its movement. (See Magic Square, Trigrams, Five Elements.)
In order to harmonize the environment, or more particularly your own environment (which could be your home, office, building, garden, etc.), it is necessary to analyze and apply the above factors and their influence upon you and your surroundings. Feng Shui, Inc. uses the knowledge of the ancient Masters (from different parts of the East) and harmonizes it in relation with the above factors to give a much better flow of energy.
Geomancy is called by different names in India, Tibet, China, Vietnam, Japan, and other countries. The key to this study remains that balance is of the foremost importance, and is essential for one’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
